Solution Porn

From Ellen Brown:

The Fed has stopped its quantitative easing program, but in its last round (called “QE3”), it was buying $85 billion per month in securities. At that rate, it would have to fire up the digital printing presses for only one additional month to rescue the suffering Puerto Ricans without hurting bondholders at all.

Werner’s third example was the US Federal Reserve’s quantitative easing program, in which it bought $1.7 trillion in mortgage-backed securities from the banks.

This won’t happen because it would draw attention to the odious nature of QE.

If the Fed can use QE to bail out Wall St. and PR, why can’t it do the same for Main Street?

From Raúl Ilargi Meijer:

If Xie is right, and I would put my money on that, despite all the housing bubbles elsewhere in the world, the Chinese, who make a lot less money than westerners, have pushed up the ‘value’ of Chinese residential real estate so massively that their homes are now ‘worth’ more than all other houses on the planet. Xie returns to this point later in the article, and says: “In tier-one cities, property costs are likely to be between 50 and 100 years of household income. At the peak of Japan’s property bubble, it was about 20 in Tokyo. “..

800 million Chinese workers have become as productive as their Western counterparts, but are not even close in terms of consumption…

In order to prevent a huge real estate crash, Beijing will have to make sure wages rise, across the board, and substantially, for hundreds of millions of people.

And prices for exported goods will rise, destroying their competitive advantage and creating profit opportunities for US manufacturers.  Of course, it will take years to re-establish the knowledge, skills and logistics to support manufacturing.  But as conditions worsen, I expect there will be lots of Chinese moving here to help.

This could be the answer to Amazon and Walmart peak oil was supposed to provide.

Unfortunately artificial intelligence and big data are looking more like porn than solutions.  Instead, we’re entering an age where forgotten knowledge, skills and behavior must be relearned.  Otherwise, we have no future.

From Danny Sjursen:

So often, both counterinsurgency and urban policing involve countless routine humiliations of a mostly innocent populace…

Dehumanization of the enemy, either at home or abroad, is as old as empire itself.

As we saw in Donbas and Catalonia, local police defend local oligarchs against national forces. Whereas local police terrorize the poor, they do not fall in line with nationals. Therefore, local military equipment becomes part of the resulting insurgency.

As governmental control necessarily atomizes, lots of social experiments will occur and hopefully the best will be adopted. Also, solutions are more likely to be responses to particular sets of problems, dependent on geography rather than comprehensive progressive theory.

Country clubs and churches represent socially cohesive wealth movements capable of self government. Indeed, many business owners currently depend on those cohorts for survival.

Most cities have already devolved to self government by and for these socially cohesive wealth movements.

The oligarchy controls both political parties, but is incapable of governing.  It remains to be seen if Steve Bannon can capitalize on the vacuum to duplicate the Trump candidacy in congressional races.  The PTB were surprised by that victory because they believed their own bullshit.  That isn’t likely to continue.

Currently, the Koch brothers’ ALEC-driven Libertarian network of orgs towers above anything on the Left, especially as the media is discredited with fake news.  If Bannon can link his Nationalist effort to Trump’s popularity, perhaps election victories are possible.  But the oligarchs will move heaven and earth to stop him, as they are doing to Trump.

As in North Carolina, it remains to be seen if anyone can stop the Koch juggernaut.  Until then, prepare for more neoliberal privatization of public assets and fascist austerity.

Barcelona has taught us one very important lesson: if revolution occurs, it will come from local oligarchs and not the increasingly marginalized poor, whose inverted totalitarianism turns every hovel into a gulag of alcohol and opiate-fueled destruction.
